Behind the Physics of Baseball

For those of you who enjoyed the podcast, but are looking for more of the physics and equations involved in the baseball we talked about today, Dr. Kasey Wagon has shared some animated slides that break down the magnus effect, drag force, and gravitational force on a pitch.

For those of you who are interested in the "sweet spot" of the bat, here's a great slow-motion video that shows how the bat shakes in a batters hands when the ball fails to connect with the sweet spot.

Dr. Wagoner also recommends checking out Alan M. Nathan's research on the Physics of Baseball at the University of Illinois that gets into a lot of the things we discussed in the podcast, but in greater detail. He also has a great collection of gifs that perfectly illustrate how the bat responds to a pitch depending on where it hits the bat.
